Before co-writing her inevitably huge hit "C'est la ouate" with Pierre Grillet,
and singing it based on the music of Philippe Chany, Caroline Loeb appeared in
a variety of films - like "Quartet" with James Ivory, or "Lady Oscar" starring
Jacques Demy. There was "Flammes" with Adolfo Arrietta, with whom she shared
the leading part. She also worked with Annick Lanoe in "Les Nanas", and she
enjoyed Virginie Thevenet's company in "La nuit Porte Jarretelles". But Caoline
Loeb was also found in the theatre - for instance with Farid Chopel ("Santa
Claus is back in town"), and Tilly ("Spaghetti Bolognaise"). Busy lady, she
then co-operated with the authors of the - in those days - mysterious group
TSE: Javier Arroyuelo and Raphael Lopez-Sanchez - using the settings and
costumes of Paloma Picasso for "Succès", in which she excelled in no less
than seven different parts.
Subsequently, Madame Loeb wrote and sang "Piranana", her debut album,
released by Ze Records in 1983, featuring all the musicians of Kid Creole And
The Coconuts. It happened in New York City, the metropolis she grew up in. A
compilation album of the Ze artists was also released, with the title "Mutant
Disco", including titles by Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Was (Not Was), Coati Mundi,
Kid Créole & The Coconuts (again), James White and others.
The cover of "Piranana" got signed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, whose stylist
she has been for quite some time now. Similarly, those two have created record
sleeves for Jonasz, Chamfort, Christophe - the list goes on.
Since then, La Loeb's hit has sort of embarked on a world tour: reaching
the number 1 slot in Italy and Argentina, number 3 in Spain, a 10th position
in Germany - and the title also gets regular airplay all around the world:
in a variety of countries which are as distant as they are unlikely, among
them China, the Yemen, Sweden, Morocco and even Russia.
And if her hit song has covered quite a distance, so has Caroline Loeb!
She took an active part in recordings by Ramuncho Matta ("Brion Gysin self-portrait"),
John Greaves ("Songs"), and she co-wrote "Paris sens interdits" with Etienne
Daho as well, produced by Arthur Baker. Apart from that, Madame Loeb has
recently found time to be part of the shortlist for a tribute to Bobby
Lapointe - "Tutti Frutti".
Loeb also worked in the radio format: for instance at France Inter. She has
presented her daily chronicles "Bon chic chroniques" at Radio Nova, edited
by Seuil Point Virgule. Last but not least, she can be found on RTL 2, with
partner Isabelle Alonso, in the show "Radio Caroline".
But the main task that has occupied Caroline Loeb since 1993, and has indeed
impassioned her, is directing work for the theatre: Right from the start,
she convinced us with Michel Hermon in "Michel Hermon chante Piaf", "Thank
you Satan", "Le voyage d'hiver" - hey, remember "Dietrich Hôtel". Then
there was a noted project with Lio, i.e. the show "Lio chante Prévert",
and she worked with Viktor Lazlo in "Loin de Paname". Also on her calling
card: "Weepers Circus", and finally "Shirley", starring Judith Magre, in
which she also adaptated the dialogues - a part which has earned the actress
the renowned "Molière" award for the best comedian achievement. For the
future, who knows, maybe there will be a new album and a return to the stage
- Caroline just loves to surprise her audience.
