Iggy Pop, born James Osterbeg in Muskegan, somewhere in Michigan, started
his musical career as drummer in a band called "The Iguanas" in 1965, but
soon he realized that the best job in a band is the singer. So 1969 he
created "The Stooges" and within two albums, named "The Stooges" and
"Fun House", Iggy became an icon of a generation fed up with the sixties
and the hippie - era. Untill the bands death in 1975 and with Iggys’
slide into hard drugs, the shows became more hardcore and more violent.
This led to the "Raw Power" - LP, which was very drug influenced but the
first successful colaboration with David Bowie. After the Stooges, in the
beginning of the punk movement, Iggy had no band and no record contract,
because he scared too many people with his behavior. Again David Bowie
gave him a chance - the chance to do his first solo album "The Idiot".
Songs that remained as disturbing as the ones on the Stooges albums,
but with a different sound. It took long to record the tracks, because
Iggy was lazy after the health smashing post Stooges years, but the album
was so successful that Bowie decided it to be the first album of a trilogy.
After "The Idiot" came "Lust For Life" and then "TV Eyes Live 77", which
was thought to be another studio album. This could possibly have been the
end of the colaboration between Iggy and Bowie, but due to the condition
that Bowies accountants had paid Iggy too much royalties, which he of
course refused to give back, an agreement had to be made. Which was: David
Bowie would produce the "BlahBlahBlah" - album. And again Bowie gave
another boost to Iggys’ career. From 1978 to 1983 Iggy recorded several
albums, each time with different musicians and only with little sucess.
So in 1983 he was in the same situation he was in when The Stooges split.
The same year David Bowie released his new album; amongst the tracks was
a song called "China Girl", written by Iggy for the "The Idiot" album in
1976. When the single was released the song became a gigantic hit worldwide
and Iggy had, for the first time in life, so much money he didn’t know
what to do with it. 1986 he cut the cord linking him to Bowie. From
October ’86 to July ’87 he played about 300 concerts and after that
tour he decided to take a one year break. When "Instinct" came out,
people were knocked out , because they thought that Iggy had settled down
or at least had been washed out after his marathon tour. But "the Iguana"
was back, hotter than hell and even more violent than on the "Raw Power"
album. The tour that followed was the best since the "Lust For Life" tour
in ’77. 1990 he released "Brick By Brick" and for the following tour he
chose the band of his son Eric. The Olympia concert hall in Paris, which
Iggy chose to tear eardrums apart, was so crowded that many of the people
who were actually there, really had the chance to see the show when the
video came out.
Here is your chance to see Iggy Pop, on the Olympia’s stage, perfoming
his show in a way only he can do...
