Every OLDIE NIGHT collection must have its reliable amount of the "usual suspects". After all, at your Rock/Pop/Beat/Reggae house party you will be bombed with requests for the hits your friends and neighbours grew up with! That's why we give you The Kinks with their Carnaby Street "Fashion" anthem, E.L.O. with their catchy post-Beatles sound, a sleazily erotic Marianne Faithful, The Box Tops with their crying baby. The Marmalade play their most gorgeous ballad, and there's the original version of the Tina Turner hit "I Can't Stand The Rain", by soul singer Ann Peebles. Sweetened with a touch of Bubblegum via Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Company. Kids' stuff, but swell to remember! At the same time, there are some mysterious catches, too. Of course, you will know the tunes, whistle the melodies. But you should take a look at some half-forgotten artists, too. Lake, for instance, were Germany's answer to US-giants like the Beach Boys and Steele Dan, mixing high harmonies with jazz-clever arrangements. Plus, they have just reformed, with a spring tour 2003 in full swing. Listen to The Bintangs, who are by no means a one-hit-wonder for their fans back home in The Netherlands. There, the band has been touring for 35 years, and is still going strong. Watch out for Peter Skellern, too. In his heyday, he performed for Her Majesty The Queen in the London Palladium, a charming balladeer who mixes his own amusing or whimsy stories with great covers of Hoagy Carmichael. "If I Only Had Time", you will reflect with John Rowles' soulful ballad. Well, time will stand still for a while with this OLDIE NIGHT.
