The creation of "Shivoham" began in 2002, when BHARGAV MISTRY started to compose
the Song of the soul (Atmashataka) for the sarod. The sarod, a classical indian instrument,
has a deep, rich and contemplative sound. When woven with the clear and vibrant voice
of APARNA PANSHIKAR, who recieved nunerous awards, including the Dattopant Deshpande
Award in 2001, the combined effect turned out to be magical. Both then continued with
Eightfold Blessing Song (Danyâshtakam),Dawn Rememberance (Prâtah Smaranam), Supreme
Worship (Parâ Pûjâ) and last but not least Knowledge of Brahman (Brahmajñânâvalî),
which was composed in Pune where APARNA lives. With a careful interweaving and
blending of the instrument and voice, the verses took on a life of their own and
became as if illuminated by the light of the age-old râgas... Shivoham was born.
ADI SHANKARA - he has been and remains to this day the most influential Indian religious
figure since the 5th century B.C..Besides his voluminous philosophical corpus, Shankara
has left behind a few poems which come closest to describing that mystical experience
on which he built his philosophical system. The five poems included here must be
counted among the greatest treasures of the human spirit. Their theme is self-realization.
They sing of a state that is Bliss, Consciousness and Reality. A state that is total
freedom, that transcendents death. That is man's real Self, buried deep within, unknown
to most of us.
On his mystical research for redemption Shankara granted the highest value to spiritual
cognition: "one may say the holy writings and bring victims to the holy spirit, one
may implement the rites and admire divinities, but as long as a human does not awake
for the realization of his identity, he can never find release - even not after
hundreds of ages".
In this sense SHANKARA - Shivoham would like to invite the listener to a journey of the spirit.
